35 Simple Ways to Make Your Daily Routine Exciting

Do you ever feel like you’re stuck on the treadmill of life, just going through the motions?  I’ve been feeling like that recently… and it sucks.  Life’s not very fun when nothing feels exciting, and it’s hard to get out of this rut when we find ourselves stuck in the loop of day-to-day life.

One thing that I’ve found that helps me when I’m feeling stuck in my daily routine is to add variety and mix things up!  It adds a bit of excitement, and it often motivates me to get going with the rest of my day!

Luckily, there are so many ways – big and small – that we can switch up our daily routines to make life a little less mundane!  Here are 35 of my favorites. (:

35 simple ways to make your daily routine exciting

window with sunrise coming through

Meet up with a friend for brunch – Brunch is my favorite meal to go out for, and eating out with friends makes it all the more fun.

Take yourself to work at a coffee shop – Switching up your work environment can make working so much more fun!  If you’re not feeling the coffee shop vibes, check out a local library. ((:

Try a new workout – Mixing up your workout routine can bring some excitement to your life, AND you might learn something new about yourself!  Check out these amazing (and free!) resources for at-home workouts that you could easily incorporate into your daily routine!

Listen to a new playlist – There are not many things better than finding a new playlist that somehow is exactly what you’ve been looking for all your life.

plants

Buy yourself a new plant – Houseplants provide amazing health benefits, such as air purification and decreased stress, but they’re also SO FUN and pretty to look at.

Check out a new restaurant for dinner – Nick and I love going out for dinner dates, but checking out a new restaurant makes it that much more exciting. ((:

Watch a new TV show – Sometimes getting wrapped up in a new show is all you need (or have the energy for) when stuck in a funk.  It’s a great way to get your mind off everything that might be bothering you!  Want some TV show recommendations?  Check out my top 15 Netflix favorites.

Go for a sunrise walk – I’ve recently started incorporating sunrise walks into my daily routine (with Nick and Bud, of course), and it’s a game-changer.  I LOVE waking up early and spending a good chunk of time outside before doing anything else.  Highly recommend if you want to start your day off strong! ((:

Listen to a new podcast – Just like finding the perfect playlist, finding an amazing podcast to binge is an unmatched feeling.  My favorite podcast shows are What We Said and Chatty Broads!

books to switch up your daily routine

Check out a book at your local library – I love spending time at my local library; it’s so calming, fun, and everyone is so nice!  If you need some great book recommendations, check out last year’s summer reading list!

Call a loved one you haven’t talked to in a while – If you’re a little extroverted, or you’re just needing some human contact that’s not over text or through social media, call a loved one!  I always love calling my family and friends, but I rarely do it because I forget that it’s even an option because it’s not a habit of mine.  However, this is something I want to work on this summer!

Sign up for a class you’ve been wanting to take – It doesn’t have to be a typical academic class; it could be a painting class, pottery class, whatever sounds fun to you!

Surprise your significant other with a date night – Date nights are fun, but surprise date nights are even better, right?!

Go golfing – This might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s definitely mine. (; Even if you don’t want to actually play a whole round of golf, you can always go hit balls at the driving range or practice your putting.  Chances are, your friends and family would love to go try it out with you!

Start a volleyball/kickball/etc. game – Summer is a great time to take advantage of the warmer weather and play some outdoor sports!  Plan a game of volleyball, kickball, softball, basketball… anything you want!

running trail

Run in a new area – I tend to get really bored running the same route every single day, so doing something as simple as switching where I run can make it loads more fun!

Get dressed up and have a mini photoshoot – Who doesn’t feel like a badass when they put on a cute outfit that makes them feel confident and then captures it in photo form?!

Sunbathe outside – Laying and soaking up the sun is not only relaxing and allows you to get away from your worldly worries for a while, but it also provides massive health benefits!  We NEED sunshine, especially the Vitamin D it provides us, so your body will thank you after spending some time outside – especially if you incorporate this into your daily routine.  Don’t forget the sunscreen, though!

Get your nails done – Who doesn’t feel like they can take over the entire world after getting a perfect manicure?!

Buy yourself something you’ve been wanting for a while – This is your excuse to treat yourself today!

Get a haircut – Freshening your hair up can not only boost your confidence but also gives you a nice little change that helps life feel more exciting!

bed

Tidy up and/or rearrange your living space – I often find that the root cause of my feeling “stuck” is my living environment.  When my apartment is feeling messy, my mind feels absolutely frazzled, so tidying up works wonders for me!!

Watch a movie at the theatre – Something about going to see a new movie at the theatre is so special and fun… and it’s good to treat ourselves every once in a while!

Check out a walking trail you’ve never been to before – If there are any walking trails near where you live, definitely go check them out!  You never know what you could find and how fun it might be. ((:

Surprise someone with a small gift – A random act of kindness can go a long way!  It also reminds you – and them – about what’s really important in life, which is especially helpful when you’re feeling stuck.

Set new goals for yourself – Setting new goals for myself often helps me get an extra boost of motivation and really makes me excited to take on the day!  But reaching those goals is the tricky part… if you have a hard time actually reaching your goals after you set them, I have a whole post about how to set goals you’ll actually succeed in!

Try a new snack item – Make grocery shopping more exciting by picking out new snacks for the week!

No-screen time – Spending a ton of time watching shows, movies, or scrolling through social media can make you feel even worse about yourself if you’re already in a rut.  Taking some time away from screens often helps me feel more grounded, so it’s definitely something I recommend adding to your daily routine!  If you find yourself feeling pretty bored without a screen in front of you, check out these 10 screen-time alternatives!

shower with plants inside

Take a relaxing bath or shower – This is something you could definitely add to your daily routine to make life a little more exciting… add some Epsom salts or a bath bomb to take things up a notch!  And don’t forget to play your favorite music. ((:

Light a new candle or use an oil diffuser – Whenever I turn on our oil diffuser, it feels like it “resets” our entire apartment.  Not only does it smell super yummy, but it can also calm my nerves, help me focus, or energize me (depending on what scent I’m using!).

Wear clothes that are out of your comfort zone – This is something I’ve been working on lately because I want to branch out and try new styles… I think there’s something really fun about trying on clothes that you never would’ve thought you’d wear.

Wake up a few minutes earlier – I LOVE waking up early; it helps me feel so much better about the day ahead, and I’m always more energized the earlier I get out of bed (I know, it’s weird).  If you’re not much of a morning person, be sure to check out these 5 simple tips to help you become one!

Buy a new journal and make journaling a habit – Buying a new journal always gets me feeling super energized and motivated because I’m so excited to start scribbling all over it!  If you want to commit to a journaling practice and make it a part of your daily routine, check out these 5 minute journal prompts for a little inspiration!

Meditate – Meditating doesn’t have to mean sitting cross-legged on the ground and being silent for 2 hours (unless you want it to)… it can mean following a calming yoga video on YouTube, painting, drawing, or anything else that calms your body and lets your mind wander.
